Major Satish Dahiya, Shaurya Chakra (22 September 1985 – 14 February 2017) was an officer of the Indian Army, posthumously awarded with the Shaurya Chakra, India's highest and most prestigious award for valour, for his actions during the 2017 Fighting terrorists in Kashmir, India. Major Satish Dahiya led his men during “Operation SATISH HAJAN’. This operation was fully conceived, planned and executed by him. He eliminated hardcore foreign terrorist single handily even when there was a heavy volume of fire. In the whole operation, he ensured the safety of his men. Even though he sustained serious gunshot wounds, he displayed fearlessness and courage beyond the call of duty. He uttered disregard to his personal safety and refused to evacuate the area of operation till the total elimination of the terrorist. He continued leading the operation till the termination and directed his men for total elimination of the terrorist. He attained martyrdom during evacuation after sustaining grave gunshots during operation.
Early life and education
Major Satish Dahiya was born on 22 Sep 1985 in village Banihari, Tehsil Narnaul, District Mahendergarh of Haryana. The son of Shri Achal Singh got his initial teaching of valour, bravery and nationalism from his parents. His father Shri Achal Singh never deterred against his only son’s will to join army and serve the nation from the front. He always motivated him to join the Indian Army. He attended Saraswati Siksha Mandir and Chaya Public School in Modi Nagar for primary education. He received his senior secondary education at Hindu school, Sonepat. Major Satish Dahiya was brilliant in studies and in sports since his childhood. He received many accolades for his participation in extra and co-curricular activities. He did his graduation from Govt. College, Kotputli in 2005 and Post-Graduation from Rajasthan University, Jaipur in 2007. Family circumstances made him to change frequent educational places but he always remains connected with studies. In the year 2008 he cleared CDS examination, assistant commandant examination and Indian railways examination with flying colours but he gave CDS his first priority and cleared the interview in the very first attempt and joined IMA (Indian Military Academy) to serve the nation from the front. Major Satish Dahiya was commissioned as a lieutenant into the Indian Army Service Corps after passing IMA in 12 Dec 2009. Although he cleared many examinations which gave him opportunity to lead a civilian life but he chose to serve the Indian Army. In the core of his heart he believed in service before self and this is the motto of Indian Army too. Decision to join Indian Army despite of having ample outside opportunities itself reflects his dedication to serve the nation from the front. It is proved true that ‘where there is a will there is way’. Major Satish Dahiya married Mrs Sujata Dahiya in 2012. He was awarded with “Chief of Army Staff Commendation Card” on 15 Jan 2013 for successfully carrying out operation from 1 NAGA Battalion. He served 1 NAGA battalion for three years. Major Satish Dahiya’s and Mrs. Sujata Dahiya’s daughter “Priyasha” was born on 15th April, 2014. Major Satish Dahiya returned to Kashmir valley once again in March 2015, when he got his posting in 30 Rashtriya Rifles. The motto of 30 Rashtriya Rifles (MAHAR) is ‘Yash Sidhi’ i.e. ‘Success & Attainment’ and he demonstrated unflinching loyalty, admirable act of valour as a Company Commander of a Rifle Company and lived up to the motto. In a very short stint of service in the company he successfully established his credentials. When the J&K was burning in the fire of mass agitations by anti-social and situation became very volatile in second half of year 2016. He played stellar role in controlling the situation for establishing the law and order in the region of area of responsibility. He joined the 13 Rashtriya Rifles, having motto "Dridhta aur Virta" and Major Satish Dahiya lived up to this motto till his last breath. Major Satish Dahiya was always known as a dedicated, devoted, soft spoken person with resolute will and sharp soldierly skills. When the world was celebrating the Valentine Day and spreading the message of Love, peace and harmony, there was extreme tense situation in Kupwara of J&K region, considering the extraordinary sense of valour of Major Satish Dahiya, he was asked to join the operation against Lashkar-e-Toiba militants. Major Satish Dahiya led his men during “Operation SATISH HAJAN’. This operation was fully conceived, planned and executed by him.
