The Jonker JS-3 Rapture is a glider built of glass-fibre, carbon fibre and Kevlar. It has a an 15-metre wingspan.

The manufacturer is Jonker Sailplanes of Potchefstroom South Africa, founded in 2004 by two brothers, Attie and Uys Jonker. The structural and chief designer is Attie Jonker, while the airfoil and main aerodynamic features were developed by Johan Bosman in co-operation with the Delft University of Technology.

The first flight of the JS-3 was on 12 December 2006.

Design and development

Type certification of the JS-MD 3 was achieved with EASA on 18 July 2019. [1]

  • TOST nose release hook and TOST™ C.G. hook enclosed by main wheel doors
  • Retractable main wheel with elastomeric shock absorbers
  • Fixed pneumatic tail wheel (180mm) with aluminium hub
  • Optional retractable tail wheel (150mm) interchangeable with fixed tail wheel
  • TE and pitot-static probe fitted to extremities of the horizontal tailplane
  • Two recessed battery boxes accessible from cockpit
  • Gooseneck dynamic microphone
  • Two independent speakers for radio and navigation computer
  • Radio antenna in rudder
  • Provision to fit 2 x 12V LiFePo 7Ah/10Ah main batteries with fuse box in luggage compartment

Variants

It is available as an 18m span variant. The wing has full-span flaperons, an elliptical planform and uses winglets. It is in 4 pieces, each tip is 1.5 metres. Two novel features are:
