The 2018 FA Community Shield (also known as The FA Community Shield supported by McDonald's for sponsorship reasons) was the 96th FA Community Shield, an annual football match played between the title holders of the Premier League and FA Cup. It was contested by local rivals Manchester City, champions of the 2017–18 Premier League, and Manchester United, the winners of the 2017–18 FA Cup, at Wembley Stadium in London on 5 August 2018. Manchester City won 5–0, with individual goals from Sergio Aguero, Ilkay Gundogan and Gabriel Jesus as well as a brace from Kevin De Bruyne, who was named man of the match. It was the biggest margin of victory in a Community Shield match since Nottingham Forest's win over Ipswich Town in the 1978 edition, and it was Manchester United's first defeat outright in the competition since 2000.

Background

This was Jose Mourinho's sixth cup final during his reign as Manchester United manager, having won Community Shield, EFL Cup, UEFA Europa League and FA Cup finals at the club while also losing a UEFA Super Cup. Meanwhile, it was Pep Guardiola's second cup final as the manager of Manchester City, following their victory over Arsenal in the 2018 EFL Cup Final.

Manchester United were looking to win the Community Shield for the second time in three years after their 2-1 victory in 2016 against Leicester City. United had won eight of their last nine matches at Wembley Stadium going into the game, as well as their last four matches in the Community Shield. Manchester City meanwhile had won their last two matches at Wembley, both in 2017–18 – beating Arsenal 3–0 in the EFL Cup Final in February and Tottenham Hotspur 3–1 in the league in April; however, they had not won three consecutive matches at Wembley since March 1970.[1]

The two sides faced each other in the Community Shield twice previously, in 1956 and 2011. United won both matches by 1-0 and 3–2 scorelines respectively.
