Just-in-time learning is an approach to individual or organizational learning and development that promotes need-related training to be readily available exactly when and how it is needed.

Methodology

Just-in-time learning is different from training or scheduled professional development, both of which are generally available at set dates and times for those who attend. What makes just-in-time learning unique is that the strategy focuses on meeting the learner's need when it arises, and not pre-scheduled education sessions that occur regardless of the immediacy or scope of need. This means that planning for just-in-time learning involves anticipating what is needed by various people, when and where they may be when they experience that learning requirement, and the creation of content that is oriented toward meeting those needs in ways that are focused and accessible for the participants at that time.

The result is often short learning videos, elearning, job aids, or other related real-world information that is timed and packaged to meet one explicit need and nothing else, so as not to overwhelm, confuse, or hinder the learner with anything that does not meet the direct need that is indicated.[1] That this learning is findable and understandable by the person who needs it is most important, as otherwise the person will become distracted or lose focus and defeat the benefits that have been promised by just-in-time learning. Meeting the need alone helps with knowledge retention and promotes feelings of empowerment.
