Mashed carrots is a dish prepared by cooking and then mashing carrots. Milk, butter, salt and pepper are commonly used in preparation and mixed in after the carrots are mashed. The dish is usually served warm and as a side dish to meat and/or vegetables. Carrots can also be roasted in the oven and mashed afterwards but boiling the carrots seems to be the preferred method of preparation.[1][2] Carrots sometimes are mixed with other cooked vegetables before mashing. These include onions, parsnips, turnips, potatoes, squash, and rutabaga.[3][4][5][6]

Culinary uses

Mashed carrots can be served as a side dish. A potato masher is a utensil which can be used to prepare the carrots.[14] After being boiled, steamed or roasted, the cooked carrots can prepared by hand or in a food processor.[7][8] In addition, canned carrots can be used to prepare mashed carrots.[15] To create mashed carrots, the carrots are cut into a uniform size. The carrots have been boiled long enough when a fork that is inserted comes out clean. Mashed carrots are served warm.[7] Mashed carrots are a major ingredient in carrot muffins and carrot cookies.[16] Mashed carrots are used in commercially prepared 'baby' food.[17] Mashed carrots are the main ingredient in carrot souffle.[18]
