Pyrokinesis, literally means " fire movement". It is purported to be the postulated psi ability to manipulate a flame, or control it. In a definition which overlaps that of thermokinesis, it could also be the purported ability to excite the atoms within an object, possibly creating enough energy to ignite the object, and can cause spontaneous human combustion[citation needed]. Pyrokinesis would be a minor form of psychokinesis, similar to poltergeist activity. Pyrokinesis is created by bouts of rage[citation needed] or intense concentration, gathering energy into a singular point and then exciting the atoms enough to cause fire[citation needed]. There is no evidence for the existence of any of these mental powers.

Stephen King's story Firestarter prominently features use of pyrokinesis and brought the idea to the mainstream. Contrary to popular belief, Carrie (also of Stephen King fame), does not possess pyrokinesis; rather, she started an electrical fire. Most characters shown to start fires with their mind, are labelled "pyrokinetics" . An example of a fictional pyrokinetic is The Human Torch from the comic book The Fantastic Four. Other popular examples include the Firebenders on the animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender, Robin Sena from the anime Witch Hunter Robin, Taranee Cook from W.I.T.C.H., and Pyro from the X- men comic book series. In the Role Playing Game DeadEarth pyrokinesis is a possible result of radiation mutation that players may acquire.
