The System Management Controller is an integrated circuit (computer chip) that is on the logic board of Apple's line of Macs. As the name implies, it is responsible for power management of the computer. It performs the following functions specifically:

  • Telling the computer when to turn on, turn off, sleep, wake, idle, and so forth.
  • Handling system resets from various commands.
  • Controlling the fans.
  • Controls backlighting
  • Hard disk spindown
  • Some charging aspects
  • Trackpad control
