Danny Briottet

Background

Danny Briottet is an influential English musician, DJ, producer, soundtrack composer, broadcaster. Founder member of Renegade Soundewave, UK electronic music pioneers at the forefront of the original electronica explosion of the late 80s/ 90s with seminal tracks such as The Phantom, Ozone Breakdown, Women Respond To Bass and Probably A Robbery and the groundbreaking LP RSW In Dub. Briottet went on to forge a successful career as producer, remixer, composer of soundtracks and international DJ. Briottet's remix and production credits include Depeche Mode, Grace Jones, Orbital, Aswad, Moby, Cypress Hill, Radiohead and a host of underground dance records and African and Arabic artists. Since 2016 Briottet has presented The ElectroScope Show on London’s Soho Radio, showcasing electronic music from the 70s to the present. (5)

In 2017 Briottet completed work on the soundtrack to the feature film 3 Way Week, directed by Bruno Coppola. (7)

Due to his links with Mute Records, Briottet became one of the first Western DJs to play extensively in the old Eastern Bloc before, during and after the fall of communism, leading him to work with various international organizations to create cultural exchange opportunities bringing together artists from different art forms and musical genres and set up music/art-based organisations internationally including proactive cultural charities in the Balkans. In 2018 Briottet was invited by former US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense and US Ambassador John J Maresca and ECPD Director Negoslav Ostojic to become Director of Music Programmes for the United Nations-mandated European Centre for Peace & Development (ECPD).

He is producing and recording/remixing under his own name and various guises including Red Star, Rhythm Riders (with Aswad), 3DB (with collaborator Dan Donovan, formerly of Big Audio Dynamite and Dreadzone) and Subsonic Legacy. Early life

Briottet grew up in West London and was heavily influenced by Jamaican music and culture. He began DJing at on the early warehouse scene in London and the Outlaw parties in New York in the 1980s, playing a mixture of reggae, hip hop, alternative- electronic and funk. He co-ran the Metro Sound System which held events in abandoned buildings in the then derelict Shoreditch. His time was split between London and New York, where he became immersed in the developing hip hop scene. These experiences and influences were brought into play when he co-founded Renegade Soundwave with Karl Bonnie and Gary Asquith in 1987.

Renegade Soundwave (RSW) Early use of sampling and computer technology, DJ skills, sub-bass exploration. Formed in London during the late '80s, Renegade Soundwave applied the punk and industrial ethic to both dub and dancefloor electronica. The trio debuted on Rhythm King Records with the 1987 single "Kray Twins," and moved to Mute Records one year later for an EP, Biting My Nails. (4)

The seminal album RSW In Dub joined the dots in the emerging electronic, rave, dub and indie scenes of late 80s / early 90s. Cited as major influence on artists such as The Prodigy, Chemical Brothers and the Drum & Bass, Techno, Breakbeat and Trip Hop movements. "Probably a Robbery" (from debut LP Soundclash), made the British pop charts, though perhaps the band's most highly regarded track The Phantom has proved an enduring anthem from the rave era. The Phantom, Women Respond to Bass, Ozone Breakdown, Probably a Robbery, Biting My Nails and Renegade Soundwave were top five US Billboard Dance singles. (4)

In 1997 Briottet collaborated with American vocalist Linda X to form Subsonic Legacy, releasing the single Revolution (Bring the Noise) on his own Disreplicant label, and I Work the Whole City and Ode To Billie Joe on Athletico Records. Briottet has worked with Electronic Arts to compose music for video games including Auto Destruct MusicState In 2000 Briottet co-founded MusicState.com, which was the first company to offer online pre-cleared music for synchronization for film and TV. Briottet was creative director of Musicstate Ltd until 2002.

Under his Red Star guise he released the singles Pretender (1999) Stranger Fruit (2000) and West London (2001) on 10 Kilo Records, with vocalist MC Spee from Dreadzone. Also on 10 Kilo Records was LA Hookers’ Hotline to the Pentgon / Sexslave (2002)

Rhythm Riders In 2005 Briottet formed Rhythm Riders, in collaboration with Tony Gad & Drummie Zeb of UK dub icons Aswad, and producer Tim Bran, alongside vocalists Solomon, Sweetie Irie and Brother Culture among others. Rhythm Riders takes the musical heritage of Aswad into a 21st century urban setting, with intricate harmonies and conscious lyrics fused with state of the art rhythms and production, taking in elements of contemporary bass music - Dub, Drum & Bass, Dubstep, Breaks, UKG, Deep House. (3) They released the LP Aswad vs the Rhythm Riders on Universal Records (2005), and the singles Come With The Love (2013) and Give Me A Sign(2014)(Subslayers Records)

In 2011 Briottet and Dan Donovan worked with Murray Lachlan Young, British poet, stand-up performer, broadcaster putting Lachlan Young's poetry to electronic beats. Briottet and Donovan, under their 3DB guise released the single Baader on Functional Records.
