Peter Gospodinov

Peter Gospodinov (* 1974 in Bulgaria) is an visual artist living in Switzerland.

Life

After the political changes in Bulgaria, he moved to Switzerland in the late 1990s.

Gospodinov attended from 1992 to 1997 the Art Academy in Sofia. From 1999 to 2003 he studied at the Visual Art School Basel.

His works include painting, collage, drawing, photography, performance and installations.

Since 2004 Gospodinov exhibits his works internationally.

Art

Peter Gospodinov has explored the nuances of color, form, and human perception since the late 1990s. Through his series of abstracts, flows, pixelations, and levels paintings, the artist continually pushes at the boundaries of the canvas’s twodimensional plane, creating spaces that seem to recede infinitely and echo a variety of visual experiences. Gospodinov’s approach to drawing is as innovative as his painting, bringing together carefully coordinated arrangements of line and color to produce stunning visual and perspectival effects.

The color conect people with energetic as well as psychological Interactions. Color vibrations have their own energetic power, they are stimulating or inhibiting our organism. They have an immediate effect on the psyche, but they do controlled by our minds and associated with previous patterns of experience. The immediate color experience, as a child still experiences, triggering a mood or vibration pattern of the psyche that coincides with the color, is the one we can consider as universal.

The artistic language which has emerged is complex and mainly abstract, without excluding the earlier phases. In many of his paintings, Peter Gospodinov experiments with colour. The layers and shades of colours and the depth of the painted surface resemble a magical transformation of matter. Time is preserved in layers and Peter Gospodinov often waits for longer periods until he adds more paint to a picture or repaints it. For him this is a process which in principle never ends. Specific interactions of colors produce specific perception and leads to unexpected visual production in the visual field (see 'Simultankontrast‘, „De la Loi du Contraste Simultané des Couleurs“ von Eugène Chevreuil, or „Interaction of color“, J. Albers).

Time and movement become more concretely visible in the works developed through the observation of dance performers (2004 - 2008). While the “object” moves to slow music, Peter Gospodinov draws a quasi snap-shot of the movements in charcoal. By leaving out certain sequences, we are sketchily led to a later movement.  In this frozen moment, the body receives an entirely different form. Time and movement concentrate and become dense, the body itself becomes movement. Here the artist works with the processual, attempts to capture movement in the medium, but also the gaps and exclusions between the movements. The viewer gains a relationship to what is happening and is incorporated in the flowing exchange between the subject who paints and the moving object. The role allocation can change: the painter is carried along by the movement and becomes a part of the dance; his view is returned. This work reminds one of Jean Paul Sartre's phenomenological ontology Being and Nothingness in which he accurately describes how we are also always a body-for-others and a how a connection to the other is unthinkable if it is not accompanied by an internal negation in which the body of the other is a secondary structure to the self. In the reciprocal observance, the drawing artist alternately becomes the subject and object, as do the dancing figures.
