C.W. Shumate entry

C.W. "Cliff" Shumate is an American businessman[1], farmer, author[2] and publisher. He was born Clifford Wayne Shumate on May 14, 1959 at Bourbon General Hospital in Paris, Kentucky.

Personal

Shumate grew up on a farm in Nicholas County near Carlisle, Kentucky[3]. He attended Nicholas County High School where he played football for the Nicholas County Bluejackets and graduated in 1977. Shumate attended and graduated from Morehead State University in Morehead, Kentucky with an agriculture degree in 1981. Shumate married Paris, KY resident Kim Bailey at the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) on April 23, 1983 in Carlisle, KY, and they are co-owners of Kentucky Enterprises, LLC[1].

Shumate produces and markets a line of dog treats under the label Blackberry Biscuits. A portion of sale proceeds for Blackberry Biscuits is donated by Shumate to the Paris Animal Welfare Society in Paris, Kentucky.[4]

In January 2015, Shumate and his wife Kim assisted a family to secure a service dog for their six-year-old son. The Wolfe County boy was born three months premature and suffers from Periventricular Nodular Heterotopia which created a severe case of Epilepsy. Lexington, KY NBC television affiliate WLEX-18 featured a story of the donation by Shumate.[5]

Literary Work

In 2016, Shumate authored and published his first book, a hardbound color-illustrated children’s adventure entitled Blackberry Tails: Gram's Journey and unveiled it at the Paris, Kentucky Art Walk event. Shumate collaborated with friend and internationally exhibited artist L. Clark Uhl, who has created paintings for U.S. Presidents Reagan and Bush, for the book's illustrations. Uhl, who resides in Southern Indiana, is owner of AD!FX, a Louisville, KY based advertising and marketing agency[8] which served as the primary layout and design source for Blackberry Tails: Gram’s Journey. Gram’s Journey (ISBN 978-0-692-62559-0) has received a United States Copyright effective January 26, 2016, and is housed in the US Library of Congress under control number 2016902593. Since introduction of Blackberry Tails: Gram’s Journey, Shumate has attended several festivals and book signing events around the Commonwealth of Kentucky[9], as well as reading to children at various Kentucky libraries and schools. The Kentucky-based story is about a lost puppy finding home[3][10], and includes a reference to Kentucky landmarks including Hinkston Creek, which borders the family farm in Nicholas County, Kentucky where Shumate was raised. Gram, the central character in the book, is a rescue dog discovered in Bourbon County, KY by Shumate's daughter in 2012. Gram, a Schnauzer mix, currently lives with the family.
