Sebastian Horn (born December 2, 1970), Florian Rein (born February 27, 1971) and Thomas Dill founded the band in 1987 and then named themselves Bananafishbones, a song by The Cure.

After the guitarist Thomas Dill, had to leave the band in 1991 Sebastian's brother Peter Horn jr. (* August 26, 1961) took his place. After first appearances at the Tölzer Gymnasium and in the Protestant parish hall of the city, the trio soon won a band competition in neighboring Wolfratshausen and made their name as one of the best live bands in the region with numerous live performances.

Since 1994, they have been releasing self-produced CDs, including the Gray Test Hits and the EP Easy Day (1995), which is also the soundtrack to the eponymous short film. Bananafishbones became known throughout Germany in 1998, when their single Come to Sin was used in a C & A commercial.

They contributed songs to the soundtracks of some German film productions including, Drei Chinesen mit dem Kontrabass (Three Chinese with the double bass), Auf Herz und Nieren (through and through), Wer früher stirbt ist länger tot (who dies earlier is dead longer), Die Wilden Kerle (The Wild Guys) as well as Tödliche Verbindungen (Deadly Connections), where they also played little guest roles. In 2007 they played the robber song for Die drei Räuber (The Three Robbers).

The three are influenced by bands such as Ween, Cake, Eels, Barenaked Ladies or Talking Heads, as well as by artists such as Elliott Smith, Woody Guthrie, Johnny Cash or Robert Palmer. They have a major live presence in Germany (about 120 concerts in the year).
