Template:SpongeBob episode"Rock-a-Bye Bivalve" is a SpongeBob SquarePants episode from season three, considered by some to be controversial. Template:Spoiler Brief summary: After finding an abandoned baby scallop, SpongeBob and Patrick decide to become "parents". Patrick, (as one could guess easily) takes the role of the dad, but ends up going off to his rock to eat donuts and watch people get hit by coconuts on TV while SpongeBob becomes a workaholic.

Plot

SpongeBob and Patrick decide to adopt a baby scallop and soon learn that raising a baby is no walk in the coral. The controversial part came when SpongeBob took on the role of the traditional housewife (and wore a dress in one scene), taking care of the baby all day while Patrick goes off to work, though in fact he is actually just going to his home to watch television, which the dense seastar somehow considers to be an actual job. SpongeBob gets mad at Patrick for shirking his duties at home and they fight.

Eventually the baby clam grows up enough to swim away. Patrick suddenly decides to "have another one" with SpongeBob (SpongeBob then gets a surprised face).

Trivia

  • SpongeBob is not the only one accused of promoting homosexuality in its cartoons; classic Bugs Bunny cartoons have contained occasional crossdressing.
  • This episode was never aired in Russia, Japan, France, Poland, Romania, Italy and Greece because it was thought to have resemble homosexuality. Though the episode is made available in those countries via pirated DVDs. Oddly enough, Japan has a genre of cartoon, or anime, known as shonen-ai, which translates to "boys love", which feature stories about homosexuality, none of which have sparked extreme controversy in Japan.
  • This episode also contains subtle sexual jokes such as:
    • When SpongeBob and Patrick are playing with the scallop in a musical montage, they are seen bicycling with the scallop past two fish, a male and a female. The male fish appears to be very confused and is shown with a thought bubble over his head, containing the equation "Sponge + Starfish = Scallop?".
    • When it's time for bed, the camera angles suggest that SpongeBob and Patrick are getting into the same bed and are talking about the baby scallop, but then the camera pulls away to reveal that the two are, in fact, sleeping on different layers of the same bed (SpongeBob's bed consists of many mattresses) and not on the same mattress.
    • At the end of the episode, when the scallop flies away and SpongeBob and Patrick are reminiscing about the fun times they had with the scallop, Patrick suggests "Let's have another", and SpongeBob seems to be in shock. Then the screen cuts to black and the episode ends.
  • After when SpongeBob says "OVERTIME?!?!", he and Patrick start to argue.

Patrick: Oh, yeah overtime man. You're always like show me where you're too tired to work! You just keep working and working!!
SpongeBob: Oh, yeah boy, you're workin' it! If that's the kind of work you're doing, show me where to sign for it. Because i've been workin' my fingers to the bone! You never help, NEVER!!
  • While SpongeBob and Patrick are arguing, if you listen closely, you can here them say "show me where..." at the same time.
  • When Patrick comes home from work for the second time, SpongeBob is show muti-tasking. In this scene SpongeBob's tie is black instead of the usual red. This is most likely an animation error.
  • When Patrick comes home from work, Spongebob is vacuuming with his foot, but when the scene cuts to Patrick watching television, Spongebob is vacuuming with one of his extra hands. This happens the first two times Patrick comes home from "work".

SpongeBob: WORK?! GRRRRR! (Take's off his wig opens the rock and sees Patrick watching TV)
Patrick: Ha-ha-ha! He got hit in the head with TWO coconuts!
SpongeBob: So, THIS is work?
Patrick: You know, It's not that easy as it looks. Sometimes I have to move the antenna, sometimes I lose the remote, and sometimes my butt itches real bad!
SpongeBob: Oh, you poor, poor thing. By the way you forgot your briefcase!!! (Briefcase shows ice cream sundaes, a spoon, and donuts , SpongeBob dumps everything in the briefcase on Patrick's head)
Patrick: So, this is the thanks I get for working overtime?
SpongeBob: ... OVERTIME??!!
  • SpongeBob: It's a baby scallop
Patrick: I'll take care of this! (He raises his foot to stomp on the scallop.)
SpongeBob: No Patrick! It's totally helpless. It looks like he can't even fly yet
Patrick: What's the matter? Is he stupid?
  • SpongeBob: Of course! Scallops like worms! (picks up worm)
Worm: Huh? Wait!! WE WILL BURY YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOUUUU!!!! (Scallop eats the worm)
  • SpongeBob: Patrick Star, we need to talk!
Patrick: Uh...Just one more minute, I gotta...(SpongeBob grabs remote)
SpongeBob: (SpongeBob Interrupts) Don't 'one more minute' me mister man! (Turns off TV)
Patrick: Hey, i'm missing the coconut!
  • Patrick: Oooh! I wanna be the mom!
Spongebob: I don't think you can be the mom because you never wear a shirt
Patrick: You're right. If I was a mom ( shows Patrick's hairy belly, armpit hair and tattoo of an anchor) this would be kind of shocking, just call me daddy!
