Air-Chair is the first single-shell chair conceived to be produced using air-moulding technology.

History of the design

Air-Chair is a single-material chair designed for the Italian company Magis by designer Jasper Morrison. The name of the product is taken from the technology used to produce it: blow moulding.

Industrial development

Air-Chair unmolding

The plastic material is loaded with fibreglass and placed into a mould, together with an inert gas that presses it against the walls of the mould. The gas creates an empty space inside the plastic cross-section, contributing significantly to saving on material and reducing the weight of the finished product. A simple analogy might be that of blowing up a balloon inside a shoebox [1]. This technology requires the use of precision-designed moulds, especially with regard to the path of air flow needed for the distribution of the polypropylene. The structure comprises tubular elements with an elliptical cross-section, and each piece is produced in three minutes from the raw material.
