Cornell University professor Howard W. Ripley published an article on this knot in 1912, having discovered it being used on American farms. As a loop-on-the-bight, it is related to the Alpine butterfly knot or Manharness knot.
This is a fun knot to tie because of the hopping method of tying it. Children learn it quickly.
