The British ship JAVA was built at Calcutta by Blackmore & Co, in 1811. The ship was 1175 tons; 159ft 2in. x 40ft 6in. (length x beam), and served in the migrant trade between Britain and Australia.

The ship was made famous by a disastrous journey to South Australia ending in numerous deaths on board. The journey from London and Plymouth England departing October 1839, arriving 5 February 1840, with between 30 and 50 passengers dying on the way. The journey was the subject of a medical review.
