The Battle of Java occurred on the island of Java, in the Pacific theatre of World War II. It involved forces from the Empire of Japan, which invaded on February 28 1942, on one side and Allied personnel, predominantly from Australia and the Netherlands, on the other. The Allied commanders signed a formal surrender at Japanese headquarters at Bandung on 12 March. Before it was signed the Japanese commander agreed to add a passage stating that the rights of prisoners under the Geneva Convention would be observed.
