Assignment in Eternity, is a book, first published in 1953, that comprises of a collection of science fiction novellas by Robert A. Heinlein, as follows:
- Gulf (1949; originally published in Astounding Science Fiction)
- Lost Legacy (1941; originally published in Super Science Stories)
- Elsewhen, (1941; originally published in Astounding Science Fiction)
- Jerry Was a Man (1947; originally published in Thrilling Wonder Stories)
Three of these ("Gulf", "Lost Legacy", and "Jerry Was a Man") contain speculation on what makes one a human, and the first two of those depict potential for evolution into a superior form of human.
The Baen Books paperback 1987 edition reprints Heinlein's future history chart, even though none of the four stories appears on the chart.
Heinlein dedicated the book "To Sprague and Catherine": L. Sprague de Camp (his friend and noted science fiction author) and his wife Catherine Crook de Camp.
