The whole Internet is based on hyperlinks. A hyperlink is text or a picture that moves you from one page on the Internet to another or from one web site to another. The actual link in the coding is preceded by something called a href tag. It enables web surfers to navigate the Internet without actually having to type a web site address, commonly know as a domain name or URL (uniform resource locator) into the browser address bar. These types of links have become the Holy Grail for webmasters and search engine optimisation companies. Search engines tend to count how many of these hyperlinks web sites have coming into their sites, and use this information, along with other key factors to rank web sites in search engine results. There are three main types of links when it comes to link building for search engine ranking.

1. Reciprocal links - This is when site a puts a link to site b on his web site, and site b links back to site a. They reciprocate. 2. Outgoing links - This is when you put a link out of your site to another site, but do not get a link back. 3. Incoming links - This is when a web page or web site external to your site puts a link on their site that directs the Internet user to your site.

When it comes to search engine marketing the latter is usually the better type of link to have.

Google and Yahoo both have ways of scoring web sites, PageRank and WebRank respectively. The amount of incoming you have affects what score the search engines give you. So when it comes to link building, you are usually better off having links coming into your site with higher scores.

Another key factor in link building is relevancy. There is no point having links coming into your site that are not relevant to your business, as these are not counted by search engines. So the best type of link you cvan have coming into your site is from a site that is in the same business sector as you, with a score 10 from both search engines scoring systems. the worst link you can have coming in is from a site that has 0 score and is nothing to do with your web site.

So if you are looking at building your link popularity, find sites in your business sector to see if it is possible to put a link to your site on them.
