Pratap Raghunath Save was a retired decorated Indian Army officer and a social activist. He was born on 20th of May,1945 to a middle-class family in a coastal village of Deheri, Umbergaon. Save's father, Raghunath Save was a teacher and a freedom fighter. Young Save joined army in order to serve the nation. He later married Sunita Save.
Social Service
After his retirement he settled back into his home town. Soon the talks regarding a mega port project started spreading throughout the village. This scared the fishermen community of the village, which was in majority, as the port project would have resulted in displacement of the fishermen, ultimately resulting in snatching away of livelihood of poor fishermen. They approached Save to seek help. Save quickly agreed to help the poor fishermen. Kinara Sangarsh Samiti was formed with Save as its president.[1] They began with peaceful protest against the project. This soon attracted the attention of the state government. Suddenly one night, Save was arrested by local police force. Then he was taken to police station and according to the villagers who were jailed too, Save was brutally beaten up by Police.
Death
He was shifted to Hinduja Hospital, where he spent his last days unconsciously. On 20 April 2000 he was pronounced dead.
After his death, this issue gained a nationwide attention and finally this project was abolished.[2]
