Wikipedia Weekly Episode 2.0 - How do you say Wikipedia?
Well, we have a title argument.... now we need a full show worth of stuff. We're aiming for a 30min show, the hour seemed a tad long.

Special Segment
Coverage of the October 19, 2006 Wikimedia Foundation retreat in Frankfurt, Germany. Wikimedia board of trustees, chapter heads, and other Wikipedians of note will assemble to discuss the future of WMF. Fuzheado will be there, and to take advantage of the gathering of folks in one locale, we can any number of segments, focusing on:
- Chapters - A conversation led by chair of the chapters committee Delphine Ménard.
- Board
- Other ideas
Correct pronounciation of 'Wikipedia'
Well, after some flaming about how it's pronounced after it was spoken aloud, I think we should hire CableModem (who I think has skype) to say it the right way, seeing as the word is derived from Hawaiian, and he is living in Hawaii. :DMichael Billington (talk • contribs) 09:27, 15 October 2006 (UTC)
- But he says "Weaky". It's "Whicky"! – Gurch 13:26, 15 October 2006 (UTC)
- The opinions of a number of Wiktionary people can be heard here and especially here. The variations in the latter are pretty wide. In general, the pronunciation of a word ultimately has to do with how people gravitate towards saying it rather than necessarily how it is "supposed to" be said, particularly for loan words. Thus, many words that English borrows from French no longer sound the same at all. Compare the pronunciations, for instance, on brouhaha or lieutenant. —Dvortygirl 14:56, 20 October 2006 (UTC)
Agenda
To keep things organised (or rather, make it possible to organise things), it might be worth having a semi-regular agenda.
Time of Recording
The current planned time for recording will be around lunch in Frankfurt. (on Friday)
Plan to be in the IRC channel and on Skype at around 10:30am to 12:00pm (UTC)
Finished recording the interview with the folks at the retreat, now to do the rest..
Introduce the panel
That'd be the five of us currently listed above. Each person says what they'd like to about themselves, and we move on.
News
Go through any recent news (for instance, any major headlines we see). Each person on the panel introduces at least one item, if possible, which the rest then talk about - so, everyone speaks equally, and we have a chance to properly talk things through. I guess each item could have a few minutes' discussion, or as much as we think it can take before it gets boring.
If we have time or nothing of interest, reading and discussing some articles on the Signpost may attract more people to read it.
Some suggested items for Episode 2:
- David: The final phase in selecting the new logos for Wikibooks, Wiktionary and Wikiversity has started, and will continue until October 31.
- Fuzheado: Larry Sanger's Wikipedia fork, Citizendium, has been in the news of late, begins its pilot today. The currently invite-only project will apply a peer-review process to existing English Wikipedia content, and re-publish it under the GFDL. The text can therefore be shared between the two projects over time. Currently no public access is allowed to Citizendium, even read-only, to avoid overloading the servers during this period. Sanger said that the pilot will initially consist of "ten editors, three constables, six authors, and me."
- IE7 adds Wikipedia to it's list of search engines "http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/searchguide/en-en/default.mspx#" "Search the free encyclopedia " - no Encarta option... is Microsoft slowing down on Encarta?
From the Signpost
- David: MyWikiBiz
- The Wikipedia account of a business selling its services in creating Wikipedia articles was blocked by Jimbo Wales, after a truce over the ethical concerns involved broke down. User:MyWikiBiz has been blocked indefinitely, and Wales deleted two of the articles created as a result.
- Tawker: $100 million copyright fund provokes discussion
- In a mailing list post on Sunday, Jimbo Wales discussed a possible scenario—what copyrighted works would the Wikipedia community want purchased and released under a free license, with a budget of US$100 million? Wales indicated that an anonymous donor might be willing to purchase a number of works and freely license them.
Special focus (Interview)
Coverage of the October 19, 2006 Wikimedia Foundation retreat in Frankfurt, Germany, including interviews of Jimbo, Brad, and Danny. Don't be surprised if more people come in at the last moment. Fuzheado will be attending and will be/is currently/already has arranging interviewees. We can also bring up or start with the topic of the week, the correct pronunciation of "Wikipedia".
Add your own questions below if you think of any before the recording session, if you don't think you can remember them.
Global Questions
- What are are your thoughts on a "kid safe" version of Wikipedia that is clearly marked as such for elementary ed. SEWiki is easier to read for young(er) children but is still uncensored, what are your thoughts on a "kid safe" version of Wikipedia to allow more widespread usage in elementary and other "censored" forms of education.
Questions for Jimbo
- In a recent email, you asked the community for things that we'd like to make free, that would otherwise be difficult to reproduce. That's such an open question, like "you're stuck on a desert island, what album would you take with you?", so I can see it invites almost any kind of answer. What kind of responses have you received to that email, and what are your own thoughts on the matter?
- So, that said... what album would you take with you to a desert island?
- It has been suggested by some users what we look into video with this $1Mil. Can you see Wikipedia moving into user created video or does video seem to be problems on a massive scale
- Would this funding allow WMF to expand server capacity to include this additional information or is this simply for the IP rights to the content, the capacity to serve it being needed to be created later?
- Wikipedia has come under fire over its accuracy in recent times, and everyone seems to be comparing it to alternatives like Britannica and, to a lesser extent, Encarta. Do you think Wikipedia has anything to learn from other major encyclopedias, and perhaps from project forks like Larry Sanger's Citizendium?
- Comments re WSJ Interview on reliability
- Do you see Iran's restriction on internet speeds as an issue for Wikipedia and citizen media?
- Has there been any contact w/ China whatsoever?
- Do you see yourself as a figurehead?
Questions for Delphine
- How would you describe your work at Wikipedia?
- What are the chapters, and what function do they perform?
- How long have you been active at Wikipedia?
- What is it like to work closely with such a wide range of people?
- Are there any major differences between the different chapters, that you've noticed?
Questions for JamesF
- What kind of work does the Chief Research Officer for the Foundation do? Because I have a few articles that need sources added.... :)
Questions for BradP
- What is happening w/ CSD G11 and what motivated you to request deletion?
Anything else
If anybody provides some particularly interesting feedback, or one of us has anything cool to say, we'd say it here. Who knows? It might be interesting, if we ever have anything to say. :)
"The World According to Wikipedia"
This would be a quick, light-hearted discussion of any particularly funny page-rankings we see on The Top 100 pages at Wikipedia. There's at least two or three minutes' worth of humour in that. :)

- I don't think everyone reads the Signpost, we could look at some choice readings. I put a note in your proposed agenda. - Zero1328 Talk? 13:45, 16 October 2006 (UTC)
- I moved "The World According to Wikipedia" to a separate segment, I think it deserves it. - Zero1328 Talk? 13:56, 16 October 2006 (UTC)
