Area code 914

Area code 914 is the telephone area code for Westchester County, New York.
914 was among the original area codes, which were announced in October 1947.[1] It originally was assigned to most of the continental portion of the New York metropolitan area (excluding New York City itself, which was assigned 212.) The 914 code originally included Nassau, Suffolk, Rockland, Putnam, Orange, Dutchess, Ulster, Sullivan and Delaware counties, plus Westchester. In 1951, Long Island (Nassau and Suffolk) were transitioned to area code 516,[1][2] reducing 914 to serve the lower Hudson Valley.
By the turn of the century, 914 was on the verge of exhaustion due to the proliferation of cell phones and Internet dial-up connections. The supply of numbers was further limited because most of the lower Hudson Valley is part of the New York City LATA, which not only serves New York City itself, but also most of Fairfield County, Connecticut–a situation which resulted in New York City going from one area code to two, plus three overlays, from 1984 to 1999.
Finally, 914 was reduced to Westchester County on June 5, 2000, while the rest of the lower Hudson Valley became 845. 914 was retained for all cell phones in the lower Hudson Valley that were in use before the split.[2]
