I just learned of {{rp}} and read its documentation, which led me to the section here on short citations. I had a brainstorm, and wondered whether it's feasible: could the <ref> or <ref /> tag itself provide for identifying pages or chapters or sections that would lead to a result like the following?

Code:

Soriani published 17 books in 2016.<ref name="glenn" sourcepart="Pages 16-17">{{cite book|url=...|title=...|last=...|first=...|accessdate=...}}</ref>. ... A list of all her works appears below.<ref name="glenn" sourcepart="Chapter 14" /> ==References== {{reflist}}

Display:

Soriani published 17 books in 2016.<super><a href="#">1</a></super>
