Direct Injection - also known as D.I. may refer to: Direct Injection Unit:

  • a method of music production whereby studio instruments, especially bass guitars, can be plugged directly into a mixing console for a better, more present signal and sound. This is as opposed to miking up a bass amplifier.

It converts the High impedance(HiZ) output of an electric guitar pickup, to a low impedance(LoZ) output, suitable for connection to a microphone/line input of an audio mixer.

This technique was developed by Audio Engineers at Abbey Road Studios during the mid 60's for the Beatles.
