Their children had been using them through the 60's. *831* appeared on the lower right hand corner of all Marianne's Ice Cream's napkins, cups, sweet N Low, sugar packets, trucks, bus benches, aprons, etc. The owners never mentioned and asked the employees not to mention the "831" unless they were asked. People asked continually and 831 began getting more and more popular! Marianne's best selling flavor was 831, coffee, almond, with Oreo cookies in it. (sort of like mud pie!) People would drive great distances to get a scoop of Marianne's 831!
In addition, all the company vehicles had some kind of 831 personalized license plates. 83 ONE, 83 WON, X 831 X, 0 831 0, M 831 M, X 831 0, 0 831 x, The Dauers still have about 30 sets of those original 831 plates! Helping to spread the 831, were tourists from all over the country and from all over the world who stopped into Marianne's because of the reputation of having such fine ice cream as well as serving giant scoops. "831" quickly spread outside of California!
Years later, it was quite a surprise to see 831 become the area code for that same area!
