The Avalon Village located between Woodward, Avenue and Second Street in Highland Park, Michigan which sits inside the City of Detroit, is an Eco-Village[1][2] which was created by Shamayim "Mama Shu" Harris when she lost her son in 2007, she dedicated the Jakobi Centre in his honor, and the whole village to help turn a negative situation into a positive realization.

When Mama Shu's 2-year-old son, Jakobi Ra, was killed by a hit-and-run driver inspired the idea for creating a safe neighbourhood ignited her, so that very situation doesn't happen to anyone else.[3]

The labor of love was established to destroy the city from it's blight and create a safe neighbourhood with a self sustaining eco-village with many projects for healing and educating the people in the neighbourhood to come together in solidarity and revitalize the district with educational tools for economic growth current projects, The Avalon Village Community Greenhouse, The Homework House, The Goddess Marketplace, The Avalon Village Healing House, The Blue Moon Cafe.

The Avalon Village and Mama Shu appeared on Ellen Degeneres show[4] where the Avalon Village was awarded 100,000 for the construction of the Homework House.[5]

It houses the Moon Ministry, a “pluralistic and non-sectarian charitable organization” Harris started in 2001. Harris is director of the ministry, which she said helps her neighbors “nurture self-knowledge, self-enhancement and self-realization” through community events. The Moon Ministry is a registered religious organization and 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

She became the first female chaplain of the Highland Park Police Department, a volunteer position she still holds.

In 2011, she ended her 17-year career as a registrar with a charter school and began planning Avalon Village more seriously.[6]

Avalon Village project was also awarded with the world humanitarian award.[7]
