Instabug is a software company founded in 2012 that provides bug reporting, crash reporting, in-app feedback, and user surveys for mobile apps. As of July 2017, it has been integrated in over 800 million devices,[1] including at least 26 of the top 100 apps globally,[2] and is third fastest growing software as a service (SaaS) company in the world. Instabug is a lightweight software development kit (SDK) used by Android, iOS, Cordova, Ionic, Xamarin, and web developers during beta testing as well as in live production versions of their apps.

It is best known for its customizable “Shake to Send” feature on the mobile user side and incredibly detailed reports on the developer side.[3] Users can attach annotated screenshots, video recordings, and voice notes to supplement their bug reports, which automatically includes network and device logs and repro steps. The SDK also integrates with a range of third-party tools used by developers, including Slack, Zapier, JIRA, Trello, Zendesk, and more.[4]

History

Instabug started in 2012 in Cairo, Egypt by two co-founders: Omar Gabr and Moataz Soliman. During their last semester at Cairo University, Gabr and Soliman created AStarApps, which offered a range of services to mobile developers, including an extremely early iOS version of Instabug’s bug reporting tool with its intuitive “Shake to Send” feature. Shortly after, Gabr and Soliman pivoted from AStarApps to focus on the bug reporter and what is now known as Instabug, Inc. They were incubated by Flat6Labs, the leading startup accelerator in the MENA region, during its Summer 2012 batch.[5]

In 2013, Instabug secured early seed investments from Georges Harik (Google employee number 7 and Advisor to Google Ventures),[6] Cairo Angels, Middle East Venture Partners, and angel investor Hala Fadel.[7] They also won first place and $50,000 in the MIT Enterprise Forum Arab Startup Competition that year.

In 2014, Instabug introduced an Android SDK and crash reporting.[8]

In 2015, Instabug was named the #1 Startup in Egypt by Forbes.[9]

In 2016, Instabug was incubated by Y Combinator, “the world’s most powerful startup incubator”,[10] as part of its Winter batch. In June of that year, Instabug raised $1.7 million in seed funding led by top venture capital firm Accel, including investments from Amr Awadallah (Co-founder and CTO of Cloudera), Jim Payne (former Co-founder and CEO of MoPub acquired by Twitter), Tim Abbott (Co-founder and CTO of Ksplice), Othman Laraki (Co-founder and CEO of Color Genomics), and others.[11] In October 2016, Instabug introduced in-app chats. In January 2017, the company introduced Instabug for Web. In February 2017, Instabug introduced user surveys.[12] In July 2017, it launched Betatesters.io, a platform connecting mobile app developers and beta testers. That same month, Instabug was named the third-fastest growing SaaS company in the world.

Products and Services

Instabug offers three main products: bug reporting, crash reporting, and in-app chats.

Bug Reporting

Instabug’s core product. With each bug report, Instabug automatically captures a screenshot that users can annotate by drawing on, blurring, and magnifying parts of it. Users can also attach further screenshots, voice notes, and screen recordings of the app. In addition, Instabug automatically sends detailed user data to developers, including the user steps needed to reproduce each bug, network request logs, and view hierarchy inspection. Instabug is best known for its “Shake to Send” feature, an intuitive user gesture that automatically activates bug reports from within the apps on which Instabug is installed.

Crash Reporting

Instabug automatically reports crashes to developers along with all stack trace information on all running threads. Instabug can also be used to log handled exceptions or errors, even if they don’t crash the app. With each crash report, Instabug automatically sends data about the running environment, the different threads’ states, steps to reproduce the crash, and network request logs. Thousands of crashes can be aggregated and viewed through charts to help developers get an overview of their app’s performance and how it changes over time, across different devices, and on different operating systems.

In-App Chats

Mobile developers who integrate Instabug can gather feedback through two-way chats with their users or testers directly within the app. They can add call-to-action buttons to the messages sent as well as links to the latest app updates, and also prompt users for app store reviews. A study of some of Instabug’s customers found that implementing in-app chats increased user engagement by 750% and eliminated negative reviews by 80%.[13]

Features

Instabug includes multiple features that supplement its core product catalog:

  • Screenshot Annotations: App users can draw on screenshots, blur any sensitive data, and magnify what's most important.
  • Screen Recording: App users can attach screen recordings to bug reports to better illustrate animation bugs or repro steps.
  • User Profiles: Developers have access to detailed data about their app’s users, including app versions, custom fields, and timelines of their application usage.
  • Third-Party Integrations: Developers can integrate Instabug with tools that receive forwarded automated rules from other software, such as JIRA, GitHub, Slack, Trello, Zendesk, Desk and more.
  • User Steps: Developers can access user steps automatically, like application events, view hierarchy changes, or touch events.
  • Network Logging: Developers can view all network requests and responses up until the moment the bug was reported to be able to identify server-related bugs.
  • View Hierarchy: Developers can inspect app views as 3D layers in order to trace and find faulty views and fix user interface (UI) bugs.

Awards

  • In June 2013, Instabug won first place at the MIT Enterprise Forum Arab Startup Competition.[14]
  • In 2015, Instabug was named the #1 startup in Egypt by Forbes.[15]
  • In 2017, Instabug was named the #3 fastest growing SaaS company in the world.[16]
