Spacemacs is a free and open source text editor built atop GNU Emacs for Unix-like and Linux operating systems and their derivatives.[5] It features both graphical and command-line user interfaces being executable under X display manager as well as within Unix terminal.[6] The text editor has syntax highlighting feature enabled for major programming languages, and is configurable manually through configuration files as well as through internal commands.[7] It is also portable to Windows and macOS through specific builds and Homebrew package management software respectively.
Spacemacs has a unique ergonomics and mnemonic key bindings design with verbose documentation. It is designed to operate in two main modes both for Emacs and Vim editor users supporting user packages installations to allow extendability.[8]
Its repository on GitHub has been starred over ten thousand times and has over seven thousand commits.[9]
