Video editing software in the 90's
I looking for a video editing software in the 90's which you could manipulate a video, meaning, to take an object from one video and to implant it in another video. I believe there was a few of them in the 90's. 77.138.185.97 (talk) 15:40, 31 May 2017 (UTC)
- Adobe Premiere was first launched in the early 90's, if I recall correctly. ᛗᛁᛟᛚᚾᛁᚱPants Tell me all about it. 15:45, 31 May 2017 (UTC)
- Which end of the '90s? This was a decade when a _lot_ changed in video editing, in particular the development of non-linear digital editing. At the start of the '90s this was expensive workstations and custom hardware video boards, by the end of the '90s it was high-end commodity PCs.
- As to brands, then Avid was the big one, then Adobe Premiere, then (for the Mac) Final Cut Pro Andy Dingley (talk) 16:20, 31 May 2017 (UTC)
- I used the Video Toaster from 1991 to 1994 and then sold it (the entire computer and video setup) to a company that used a lot of them to make TV commercials. 209.149.113.5 (talk) 17:48, 31 May 2017 (UTC)
Thick touchpad tape
Can anyone recommend a decent tape that i can use on the bottom quarter of my laptop touchpad to dull/numb it completely? It's one of those with no independent buttons and it irritates me as I can't leave a finger or two resting near the bottom to left or right click because the cursor can't work with another finger on the pad. I've tried cut-to-size/shape decals, electrical tape, and both on top of each other. Together they were thick enough to stop me being able to use the cursor through them, but i still can't rest my fingers on the area or i can't move the cursor on the clear area above. Anyone have a solution other than a wireless mouse? Thanks ツ Jenova20 (email) 19:12, 31 May 2017 (UTC)
- Try a couple layers of those screen covers they sell for smartphones. ᛗᛁᛟᛚᚾᛁᚱPants Tell me all about it. 19:30, 31 May 2017 (UTC)
- Anything better? Touching screens still works well through screen protectors so this seems like it will require a lot of layers or just not work. Thanks for the suggestion ツ Jenova20 (email) 20:11, 31 May 2017 (UTC)
- That's why I said a couple. I was playing around once and found that my old Samsung Galaxy s2 wouldn't register touches through two of them. The only other thing I can think of is electrical tape with some superglue added to keep it from peeling up. ᛗᛁᛟᛚᚾᛁᚱPants Tell me all about it. 22:20, 31 May 2017 (UTC)

- I'll give it a try later. I've already tried electrical tape on top of a decal. That was enough to dull it a bit, but not enough to rest a finger on and still use the uncovered part of the touchpad. Thanks ツ Jenova20 (email) 08:59, 1 June 2017 (UTC)
- I am going to offer an "XY solution": disable the touchpad and use a real mouse (IMO even a cheap USB mouse is better than a good touchpad). This can be done programatically. IIRC you asked previously about Ubuntu-related stuff; in which case, this looks relevant. TigraanClick here to contact me 13:24, 1 June 2017 (UTC)
- I had that thought, but I'm not aware of a solution that would only disable part of a touchpad. If there is a setup app for the pad driver that excludes part of the touch-pad, that would obviously be ideal.
- Most modern touchpads are capacitive sensors, which are tricky to block. "Blocking them" usually just involves putting some non-conductor down to increase the distance between your finger and the sensor. A piece of cloth might be ideal. ApLundell (talk) 13:45, 1 June 2017 (UTC)
- Disabling only part of the touchpad at the software level is probably next to impossible, yes. TigraanClick here to contact me 16:18, 1 June 2017 (UTC)
- This is the sort of thing someone shouldn't say where I can read it. Because now I'm going to be loading up my old laptop touchpad driver in .net reflector and trying to see if I can do that this weekend. ᛗᛁᛟᛚᚾᛁᚱPants Tell me all about it. 16:28, 1 June 2017 (UTC)

- TBH, I agree with Tigraan. If a flat surface is not available, something like an air mouse might be the best approach. ᛗᛁᛟᛚᚾᛁᚱPants Tell me all about it. 13:59, 1 June 2017 (UTC)
- The air mouse looks interesting enough to buy anyway, but i'll try a few different thicknesses of tape and maybe cloth tonight and update on the results later. Thanks ツ Jenova20 (email) 08:28, 2 June 2017 (UTC)

Windows virtual machine
How exactly do you run a Windows XP virtual machine on Windows 7? 2601:646:8E01:7E0B:C48C:89F3:D39F:6C61 (talk) 08:15, 2 June 2017 (UTC)
- One way is to use Bochs - I've run Windows 8, Windows 7 and XP as vms on XP. Why virtualise XP under XP? Benchmarking, so I could see just how slow the later versions of Windows were, compared to XP. Using the same method, I have Slackware running under W10. --TrogWoolley (talk) 09:13, 2 June 2017 (UTC)
- Or VirtualBox. You will need some Windows XP install media (a CD-ROM or a an .iso file). First you install the VM software, then you set up your VM instance, then you just install XP on it just like you would for a metal machine. ᛗᛁᛟᛚᚾᛁᚱPants Tell me all about it. 12:30, 2 June 2017 (UTC)
- VirtualBox was the first thing I thought of too since it's free and fairly easy to set up. I found a Microsoft VHD pack with an XP image that should work. After you download & extract the VHD file, you can make a new VM in VirtualBox and when it asks you for the VHD info, point it to the Windows XP VHD. - Virtual PC runs on Windows 7 and supports Windows XP as a guest. RudolfRed (talk) 16:32, 2 June 2017 (UTC)
- There's some good info in this thread, folks. Considering that I'm setting up a couple of VM's myself, this thread has been very useful to me (and, I hope, to the OP). ᛗᛁᛟᛚᚾᛁᚱPants Tell me all about it. 16:40, 2 June 2017 (UTC)
- I think I actually figured out how to solve the problem without resorting to virtualization, but thanks anyway! 2601:646:8E01:7E0B:68C1:51CC:3DC8:E141 (talk) 00:08, 4 June 2017 (UTC)
.apk¬1
1)
I’ve managed to find and download “Word”, “Excel”, “OneNote” and “PowerPoint”, also able to use them (Word and Excel) without internet access to an extent. “PowerPoint.apk” is not used yet. My question is, “Could the saved file(s) be used by the PC’s designated “MS Office” applications after they are transferred?”

I’m unable to find “MS Outlook” (important), “Access”, “Frontpage”, “Publisher”… Could someone direct them to me in the “Google Play Store” please? My browsing method is limited, so a glance before download is required…

Smart phone 'charging method'
When I’m charging my “Smart phone”, what should I do?
1) Take it to the last point (15% my phone limit) than recharge it:
a) by switching the phone “off” than recharge it to:
i) 90% (this is the time when the phone shows green light)
ii) 100%.
b) by keeping the phone “on” than recharge it to (a)’s (i) or (ii).
P.S: My phone’s battery is of non-removable type, what is the best way to keep it well for over 5 years or so?
116.58.204.169 (talk) 19:01, 2 June 2017 (UTC)
- Likely a Lithium-ion battery inside. Read Memory_effect#Age_and_use.E2.80.94normal_end-of-life. --Kharon (talk) 01:01, 3 June 2017 (UTC)
- Unlike other rechargeable devices, which seem to just keep charging the battery forever, mobile phones seem to have figured out how to do it right. So, I'd just trust the software to charge it optimally for battery life. StuRat (talk) 22:10, 3 June 2017 (UTC)
Sony Xperia Alarm Ringtone
The phone uses this particular audio (Alarm Xperia) for alarm purpose only. I require two downloadable link of stated audio, one for “PC”’s purpose and the other for “Smart phone”’s purpose. Could you help please?
Note: I’m unsure of the following i.e., one ‘‘file type’’ could be used for both enquoted machines…

Search engine
Are there any search engines that would allow me to search Wikipedia for uncapitalised forms of words? Occasionally I look for "s" added to Inuit in error. I want to look for inuit as some could be correct but the majority would not be. CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Sunasuttuq 01:42, 3 June 2017 (UTC)
- Our search engine can do it with insource regex like
inuit insource:/ inuit/
. The first inuit is a filter to reduce the number of hits before the expensive regex. The space is to avoid url's. See more at mw:Help:CirrusSearch#Insource. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:29, 4 June 2017 (UTC)
Firefox/windows 10 weird "lightning" flashes
Hi, been searching for this on google, but every search string is also the name of some software package ;) So just started using Win10, and Firefox, and every so often, there is some white flash on the screen, it's like some window is about to pop up, then it disappears, all in about half a second. What is going on? IBE (talk) 22:00, 3 June 2017 (UTC)
- Probably malware. They often pop up a window, then change it to "always on bottom", so you don't close it immediately. They hope that you will discover it later, not know it's just a worthless ad, read it, and maybe buy whatever useless crap they are selling. StuRat (talk) 22:07, 3 June 2017 (UTC)
- Interesting, but why can't I find it? Does firefox/ win 10 actually delete/forcibly close the window? If malware, can they also manage to install software using this junk? IBE (talk) 00:17, 4 June 2017 (UTC)
- I've also sen versions that make the window invisible somehow, possibly off the screen. I'm not quite sure what they are up to with this, but I'm sure it's not good. Possibly it can just generate visible pop-ups from there periodically. StuRat (talk) 01:38, 4 June 2017 (UTC)
- Is there a way to hack in and see what they are up to? IBE (talk) 02:14, 4 June 2017 (UTC)

KB3086255
What exactly does security update KB3086255 do to Windows 7? And how exactly does it stop the original Call of Duty (the good one) from loading? (Note that I am not asking what to do about it -- I've already figured that part out for myself ;-) .) 2601:646:8E01:7E0B:68C1:51CC:3DC8:E141 (talk) 00:12, 4 June 2017 (UTC)

2) Could it be used without an internet connection? - Last time (4 years ago) I done a research and internet connection and e-mail account connectivity wasn't not required. It wass off-line...

1 USB front port out of 4 works
I have 2x USB 3.0 ports and 2x USB 2.0 ports, but only one 3.0 is working. These are front ports.
Any causes? I have tried re-installing the chipset drivers. Also tried resetting the BIOS, and checking any relevant option therein. I don't remember if they ever worked, it's a relatively new PC (a few days), which I did not build myself.
Loose cable maybe? Mobo limitation? Sorry I'm not really enough savvy to check this myself. Definitively know someone who can, though.
I'm suspecting it's because (this might be a stupid hypothesis) because I'm using the x62 Kraken and the Maximus had only one 2.0 header?
