Mac Malware includes viruses, trojan horses, worms and other types of malware that affects the Mac Operating System. Apple’s OS X is considered less vulnerable from malware or any virus attacks as there is a frequent release of software updates to find and remove mac defender malwares.[1]

History

Bit9 and Carbon Black relays 2015 was the most prolific year for Mac malware:[2]

  • Lamadai – Java vulnerability.[3]
  • Appetite – Trojan Horse file targeted government organizations.
  • Coin Thief – It stole bitcoin login credentials through cracked AngryBird applications.

Ransomware

In March 2016 Apple shut down the first ransomware attack targeted against Mac users, encrypting the user's confidential information.[4] After completing the encryption process, KeRanger demanded that victims pay one bitcoin (about $400) for the user to recover their credentials.[5]
