Vincotech is an affiliated company within the Mitsubishi Electric Corporation. The enterprise develops and manufactures high-quality electronic power components for motion control, renewable energy, and UPS and power supply applications. A market leader in power modules, Vincotech delivers off-the-shelf products as well as customized solutions. [1]

Vincotech is a portmanteau word that combines the Latin term vincere (to win, to vanquish, to conquer) with tech as in technology.

History

[edit]

Vincotech's roots date back to 1968, when the Telecommunication Group of Siemens AG began manufacturing hybrid circuits in Munich. Siemens bought the Bicske plant in 1992 and Siemens EC unit began manufacturing power modules and hybrid circuits there in 1996.
Tyco took over Siemens EC and renamed it Tyco Electronics, Electronic Modules, in 2000. Seven years later, the Gores Group acquired Tyco Electronics Power Systems [2], carved out the former Electronic Modules business and renamed it Vincotech. In 2010, Mitsubishi Electric Corporation acquired Vincotech [3], which has since operated independently as an affiliated company.

Operations

[edit]

Headquartered in Unterhaching near Munich, Germany, the company employs around 500 people worldwide. Vincotech owns and operates the production site in Bicske, Hungary. The ISO/TS16949-, and ISO14001- certified factory in Hungary develops and manufactures all power modules in compliance with the RoHS standard.

Products and services

[edit]

Vincotech serves the motion control, the solar, the UPS, and the Power Supply markets with a wide range of power module topologies, standard solder-pin connections, Press-fit technology, spring connections, innovative Thermal Interface Material (TIM), and a broad power spectrum ranging from 5A to 600A and from 600V to 2400V. [4]

The offering encompasses Intelligent Power Modules (IPM), Power Integrated Modules (PIM, a combination of input rectifier, inverter and brake chopper), sixpack inverters, and rectifiers, PFC-, H-bridge, half-bridge, booster, as well as NPC/MNPC/AMNPC converter modules.

Vincotech's power modules are available in 17 different standard housings:[5]

  • flow 0 12mm 2-clip
  • flow 0 17mm 2-clip
  • flow 0 17mm 4-clip
  • flow 1 12mm
  • flow 1 17mm
  • flow 1B
  • flow 2
  • flow90 1

Technologies and topologies

[edit]

Vincotech power modules are based on components sourced from over 12 different leading manufacturers of semiconductor switches (IGBT, MOSFET, JFET, Thyristor and diodes (Si,SiC)) as well as passive components (shunts, ceramic capacitors), NTC, PTC.

Some of the key features and properties of these power modules are:

  • All topologies with low stray inductance
  • 17 different standard housings
    • Housing height of 12 and 17 mm
    • Free pin positioning
    • Flexible heat sink orientation (horizontal and vertical)
    • Various contact options: solder, Press-fit, screw and spring terminals
    • With or without baseplate
    • With pre-applied thermal interface material including highly
    • Conductive phase change material
    • Clip-based mounting - no added screws for required PCB mounting
  • Convex, pre-bent DCB to minimize thermal grease thickness
  • Standard Al2O3 and advanced AlN substrate for improved thermal connectivity
  • Simulation tools that interactively calculate modules’ electrical and thermal behavior based on fully measured parameters

Markets and applications

[edit]
  • Industrial drives
Vincotech offers power integrated modules (PIM/CIB – converter, inverter and brake), sixpacks (3-phase inverters), half-bridges and rectifier modules engineered to support standard drive applications for industrial use and motor power ranges from 1 to 100kW.
  • Embedded drives
Drives in circulation pumps, fans, air-conditioners and other devices connected to the public power grid require active power factor correction (PFC). These PIM and IPM modules feature integrated PFC.
  • Solar inverters
Photovoltaic applications require DC-to-DC converter circuits that adjust the solar input voltage to the maximum power point (MPP) and DC-to-AC converters to deliver solar energy to the public power grid. Vincotech’s innovative modules support up to 250kW.
Power components for UPS applications, modules for AC/DC and DC/AC power conversion, and topologies such as single- and three-phase rectifiers, half- and H-bridges, boosters, and NPC/MNPC/AMNPC for power ranges up to 200kW
  • Welding
Inverter welding units need modules that can handle high switching frequencies in resonant mode or in zero voltage switching (ZVS) mode, and are equipped with H- and half-bridge topologies. Vincotech modules also come with PFC to draw maximum power from the single-phase grid.
Switched-mode power supplies are used in industrial applications with power electronics and in battery chargers. Vincotech modules are equipped with PFC circuits (AC-DC), half- and H-bridges, and step-up and step-down converters (DC-DC) for these applications.
