Hello Internet is an audio podcast hosted by YouTube content creators CGP Grey and Brady Haran.[1] It debuted in 2014 and currently has 79 episodes, 1 bonus episode, and 1 episode which was released exclusively as a vinyl record.[2][3][4] Episodes are typically between one and two hours long.[5]
The podcast is credited with coining the term "freebooting", as a more emotive word than "infringement", to describe the unauthorized re-hosting of online content, done typically to profit from advertisements alongside the content.[6][7][8]
The podcast peaked as the #1 iTunes podcast in the United Kingdom, United States, Germany, Canada and Australia in February 2014[9] and was selected as one of Apple's best new podcasts of 2014.[10][11][12]
Reception
In 2014, Hello Internet was listed as one of Apple's best new podcasts.[12] The Guardian included the podcast among its 50 best of 2016, naming episode 66 ("A Classic Episode") its episode of the year. The paper described the podcast as having "in-depth debates and banter that is actually amusing".[13]
Official flag

At the end of 2015, a postal vote for the official flag of the podcast was held.[14] Flag submissions were solicited from listeners, from which the hosts then selected five finalists. The candidates were announced in a "bonus" episode titled "The Shortlist", which started the referendum. Votes could be cast only by postcard, and an instant-runoff voting system was used.[15] The vote count and the announcement of the results was filmed and published as a video episode #53 "Two Dudes Counting".[16]
Adoption of "CGP Grey" the penguin
At a charity auction at the Bristol Zoo, raising money for African penguin conservation, Brady and CGP Grey had the opportunity to have a dinner at the Bristol Zoo with David Prowse, known for being the body of Darth Vader. Brady was able to organize an event where listeners of the podcast would get to watch the film Star Wars with Prowse, Grey, and himself. Tickets for the event were sold to the podcast's audience and the proceeds were donated to the fund. [17]
