OpenAP

OpenAP was the first open source Linux distribution released to replace the factory firmware on a number of commercially available 802.11b wireless access points based on the Eumitcom WL11000SA-N board. This included the US Robotics USR 2450, the SMC Networks 2652W EZconnect Wireless AP and the Addtron AWS-100. The idea of releasing third party and open source firmware for commercially available wireless access points has been followed by a number of more recent projects, such as OpenWRT and HyperWRT which both provide replacement firmware for the very popular Linksys WRT54G family of devices.

OpenAP was released in early 2002 by Instant802 Networks, now known as Devicescape Software, complete with instructions for reprogramming the flash on any of the supported devices, full source code under the GPL license, and a mailing list for discussions. The project's home page, http://opensource.instant802.com, is no longer available, but can still be viewed through the Way Back Machine.
