Report from the Danish Wikipedia
- By Snailwalker, and Malene, 17 September 2006
Status and community news
As of Sunday, 17 September 2006, the Danish language Wikipedia contained about 48,936 articles. The Danish wikipedia has no such thing as featured articles, however every week a new article is shown on the main page and one could say it is a kind of a featured article. The Danish Wikipedia has recently begun selecting good articles. The Danish wikipedia used to change the main page article daily until 12 September 2005.
Besides featuring Danish articles on the main page a article from the Skanwiki project (ie. Sweden, Norway and Denmark). Depending on the day of the week a Danish, Swedish, Norwegian (Nynorsk and Bokmål), and once in a while a Faroese or Icelandic article is displayed on the main page.
The Danish wikipedia has 8,325 registered users with 27 administrators (0.32 %)
On the 15th of september a tough decision was made to ban a wellknown regular user, who has been contributing to the project for many years. This is the first time the possibility to ban a user has been used, apart from bans of a few welknown vandals like willy on wheels.
Co-operation with Danish Broadcasting Corporation
The Danish Wikipedia is working together with the national Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR) to expand articles about the national Danish soccer team and the Danish league (SAS Ligaen). DR opens Wikipedia in a diffrent skin and with a kind of sports portal (an example can be seen here. The skin is being set by a cookie that times out after 10 min of inactivity.
New users
Over the summer we have received many new users. As a result we have started a campaign to help new users find their way on the Danish Wikipedia. As an example a team of mentors and a central help-page has been started. The welcoming template system has been reformed and the front page has been redesigned to meet some of the criticism from the newcomers.
