Crypto-shredding https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crypto-shredding

Crypto-shredding is the practice of the practice of making the encryption keys unavailable.[1] This requires that the data has been encrypted.

Getting rid of old backup tapes, computers, phones, MFC's can be challenging when confidentiality of data is an issue. When encryption is in place, it will enable a smooth transition of old hardware. Confidentiality is a big driver of encryption.

The motive of deleting data is...

Use

The more specific the data is encrypted by different keys, the more specific data can be deleted: Disk encryption File encryption Data encryption Different Data encryption per storage/use.

Right to be forgotten. Privacy e.g. social security number, name, passport number Problem: Unique identifier (encrypted hash?).
