Reinabelle Reyes is a lecturer in the Department of Physics and Department of Information Systems and Computer Science Ateneo de Manila University. In 2010, while studying for her PhD, her work confirmed Albert Einstein’s theory on a cosmic scale by showing how galaxies up to 3.5 billion light years away are clustered together in exactly the way General Relativity predicts.
Early life and education
Reyes graduated from Philippine Science High School in 2001, and went on to study for a BSc in Physics at Ateneo de Manila University, which she completed in 2005.[1] She then went on to receive a Diploma in High Energy Physics from Abdus Salam International Center for Theoretical Physics, Italy in 2006.[1] Following this, she began a PhD in Astrophysics at Princeton University, United States, which she completed in 2011.[1]
Career and impact
Reinabelle Reyes has been called “The Filipina who proved Einstein right” after her work confirming Albert Einstein’s Theory of Relativity on a cosmic scale in 2010 during her PhD studies in the United States.[2] Currently working in the Philippines, she now works as an independent data scientist consulting for private companies, juggling several projects at the same time.[3] She is also a part-time faculty member at Ateneo de Manila University, one of the leading universities in the country, and Rizal Technological University, the only university in the Philippines with an astronomy program.[3] In 2013, she worked on the ReliefOps.Ph[4] project, which was funded by the Department of Science and Technology in the Philippines, is a web-based decision support tool for better logistics during disaster relief and rescue operations.[3] Reyes refers to ReliefOps.Ph as an example of how to leverage the "new invisible college" (referring to Caroline Wagner's work on global science networks).[3] The project was conceived in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan on November 2013 with Joline Uichanco, assistant professor at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. The collaboration thereafter expanded to include Ateneo de Manila University, IBM Philippines, the Department of Science and Technology, and the Department of Social Welfare and Development in the Philippines.[3] It aims to contribute to the government's R&D initiatives to address the major challenges in disaster risk reduction and management facing the Philippines.[3]
Reyes describes herself as pasionate about science outreach asd she encourages other researchers to start early in practicing sharing their work with non-scientists. She says,
There are so few of us in the field, so there are fewer opportunities for young people to have personal role models. We can address this only by reaching out, even though it may be outside our comfort zones.
Professional association and recognition
Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Kavli Institute for Cosmological Physics, University of Chicago, USA, 2011–2013.
