ReCore is an upcoming action-adventure shooter video game developed by Comcept and Armature Studio and published by Microsoft Studios for Microsoft Windows and Xbox One. Directed by Mark Pacini, written by Joseph Staten with Keiji Inafune as producer, it will be released worldwide in September 2016.

One of the first volunteers for the utopian Far Eden colony, Joule Adams, wakes up after centuries in cryosleep to find that nothing has gone according to plan. With her trusty robot companions, Joule begins her adventure in Far Eden to save mankind from a terrible fate.

Plot

Far Eden was one of many planets outside of our solar system discovered in the first decades of the 21st century. But while Far Eden was relatively close to Earth in cosmic terms, it was still many light years away. [3]

During the 2020s, Earth had been ravaged by a terrible disease called Dust Devil and a concerted global effort, led by an organization known as the Mandate, did its best to manage outbreak after outbreak of this deadly contagion. With Mandate unable to stop Dust Devil and knowing that human life on Earth was doomed, the Mandate launched a series of missions to a distant planet with promising data - far Eden. First, thousands of Corebots were sent to build atmospheric processing facilities capable of taming Far Eden’s storm-ridden atmosphere before a first group of colonists that included Joule—but not her father—made the exodus from Earth. These colonists would hibernate in cryo-sleep for 200 years while the terraforming process finished in the hopes that when Joule and the other Far Eden personnel woke, they would step out onto a garden world with blue skies, water, trees, but instead when Joule and her Corebot companion, Mack, awake, the terraforming machines have failed, most of the Corebots have gone rogue, and the other human colonists are nowhere to be found. The only contact Joule has with Earth is this centuries-old message from her Father. [4]

Gameplay

ReCore is an action-adventure shooter game played from a third-person view, centering around Joule and her robotic companions, whose function is to aid her in combat and puzzle solving; these six types of creatures are amenable to improvement, should players find the blueprints and materials to do so, which grants upgrades to their attack and defense. Players can level up Joule's weapons and vitality. Ranged weapons have four kinds of ammunition distinguished by color, each with a purpose to take down the enemy with a matching color. Furthermore, if one of Joule's companions matches the color of an enemy, it will thus inflict more damage in combat. Joule also wields a grappling hook that she uses to navigate across platforms and extract her enemies' energy cores.[5][6] Removing a power core from one location to another and high-flying environmental challenges represent the puzzle solving.[7]

Development

ReCore was first revealed at the 2015 Electronic Entertainment Expo during Microsoft's opening press conference prior to the start of the show.[8][9] In the debut trailer for the game, a young woman is shown in a vast desert, accompanied by a robotic dog with a glowing sphere in its abdomen.[10] As the pair explore a vault, they are attacked by robotic enemies.[8] The woman has a grappling hook that she uses to remove the cores from the enemies, causing them to collapse, but when the pair are about to be overwhelmed, the robot dog self-destructs to destroy the enemy robots, leaving behind its core.[8][10] The woman collects the core and finds a humanoid robot in the vault and inserts the core into it.[10] The robot comes to life, and the two appear to recognize each other again.[10]

ReCore is being designed by Comcept, which is a development studio started by former Capcom employee Keiji Inafune.[11] Partnering with Comcept is Armature Studio, formed by designers who worked on Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate, and the prior Mega Man X series spinoff concept Maverick Hunter.[10] The game is directed by Mark Pacini, director of the Metroid Prime series. At the conclusion of the debut trailer, Microsoft revealed the game is to be released in the second quarter of 2016.[8]

Chad Seiter, who worked on arrangements for "Pokemon: Symphonic Evolutions" and "The Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses", is composing music for the game.[12] On January 4, 2016, Microsoft announced that ReCore would also be released for Microsoft Windows, but also implied that the game had been delayed.[13]
