John McPhee's profile of David Brower (the 'archdruid') and some of his natural enemies. In describing the battles to protect barrier islands from housing development, canyons from dams, or mountains from mining, McPhee describes no only Brower's love for and desire to protect these natural wonders, but also the developers' desire to make useful 'things' (housing, irrigation, or minerals respectively) for people.
