Overview

The Hello Internet (HI) podcast has been started in January 2014 by its two co-host CGP Grey and Brady Haran. The podcast features discussions pertaining to their lives as professional content creators for YouTube, as well as their interests and annoyances. Typical topics include new gadgets, technology etiquette, workplace efficiency, wristwatches, plane accidents, vexillology, and the differences between Grey's and Haran's personal mannerisms.[1] As a result of their conversations, Haran has been credited as coining the term "freebooting" to refer to the unauthorized rehosting of online media.[2]

Reception

The podcast peaked as the #1 iTunes podcast in United Kingdom, United States, Germany, Canada, and Australia.[3] It was selected as one of Apple's best new podcasts of 2014.[4] Grey reported a podcast listenership of approximately "a quarter million" downloads per episode as of September 2015.[5]

Hotstopper awareness

HI#49 43'30"

In one of his rant about how things should work, Grey complained about the failure of employees at Starbucks to give him the contraption they designed to obstruct the cap-hole of coffee drinks. For lack of a better word, he coined the term "hotstopper" to describe this device, based on its functionality of "stopping the `hot` from coming out of the cup"[citation needed]. After the show(??timeline??), Grey asked twitter @StarBucksUK to have them in all Starbucks in the United Kingdom. The situation went viral, when listener started to ... In episode ..., the hosts came back on the ripple effect of eventually turned the whole "viral bullying"(??) into a structured campaign to raise awareness about the issue of hot drink spillages, more specifically their nefarious effects for small children. On october 19 2015, Brady Haran blogged about this initiative and the creation of a fundraising campaign in favour of the Children's Burn Trust.

Vexilology

On many podcast episodes ([citation needed]), Brady and Grey have been discussing flags. Despite not being expert in vexillology, ...

The official flag of the Hello Internet podcast.

The interest of the community toward this particular topic eventually lead in 2015 to the democratic referendum to choose the official flag of Hello Internet. Having shown interest in voting methodology, Grey devised the protocol for the vote of listener around the world. First, a short list of five flags was made from diverse suggestion made by the community on the Hello Internet reddit. The five contenders was :

[list of flags]

  1. Nail & Gear
  2. Flaggy Flag
  3. White Cross
  4. H.I. Logo
  5. Club & Claw

The ballot was to be sent using a postcard, following strict rules of formatting. The vote count followed the ... method and the result was:

  1. Nail & Gear
  2. Flaggy Flag
