Zaira Wasim, hailing from Srinagar, is going to play as child Geeta Phogat. Ninth class student from St. Paul’s International Academy Sonwar, Zaira had no idea of acting upto this date. “I hadn’t any idea of acting in my mind when Fitoor’s associate casting director from Mukesh Chabra’s office who is the cast director of Dangal also came to our college for auditions.I along with my friends were auditioned but none among us was selected.”says Zaira. Zaira who is busy with her kushti and language classes in Bandra Mumbai says that she was selected for the role in Dangal without auditions. “ I got a call from Mukesh Chabra’s(cast director of Dangal) Office all the way from Mumbai to attend an important workshop for a week. I went to Mumbai where I attended workshop with acrimoniousness and hard feelings in me because there were already 19 girls in our workshop who had already done one or more ads or serials and i had to do some scenes infront of them,so, I was like there is no space for me.”says 15 year Zaira in the same breath. Aamir and the makers of the film were said to be in search of girls who didn’t have any prior bollywood experience. They were looking for fresh faces across the country for the four girl characters of the film for which they conducted auditions in different cities including states of Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and other cities of the country.According to an Indian based news organisation Dunya News Network,”Aamir Khan has rejected over 21000 girls in search of perfect faces during auditions.” A Kashmir based film production company KJ productions has been encouraging to Zaira. It was KJ’s benevolence and indulgence by which Zaira succeed in her two national ads. One for Tata Sky which was shooted in Kashmir’s Gulmarg and another was shooted in Almora Uttarakhand for Nokia Lumia. On these sets she got to know lot of things. “I was like new to the world when i was working with my co-actors on these ad shoot sets.” On questioning her that who braced her to reach this level she says that her Principal supported her alot to reach Mumbai.”First of all my school principal buttressed me ,without her it was all impossible. She was the one who encouraged me and recognised my talent and she pushed me and convinced my parents” Zaira says adding that she has taken leave from school for some months to concentrate on shootings. Zaira is sensible and practical girl according to her family members and friends. She has never made her attitude superior or gilt-edged even after getting chance in bollywood. Her friends, classmates, cousins and relatives have became fans of her low-level and earthy mental attitude. ”Even though she is busy with shootings, training classes and workshops but she doesn’t forget her friends and comrades” says her cousin, classmate and soulmate Fatima Ashraf who believes that they are more than cousins. Fatima addes “no one among us had even imagined that one day Zaira will go to Mumbai and that too to come up and show her hidden talent on silver screen with Aamir Khan.” The first phase of the shootings has been started in Ludhiana and Zaira is so excited to do her debut film that too with Mr Perfectionist. Doing films or staying in Mumbai is not her dream. After this film she wants to continuously concentrate on her studies. “My first priorty are my studies and doing this film is my hobby”articulated Zaira proudly. In this turmoil region of Kashmir where most of the people doesn’t allow their daughters to even step out of their homes, Zaira made it to bollywood. Her parents were exicited to learn that their daughter is going to show her talent on silver screen but still, her father, Zahid Wasim, executive manager of Jammu and Kashmir bank was kind of reluctant to allow her daughter to work in industry.” Papa wasn’t agreeing to this because of the thought ki ‘loog kya kahenge’(what would people say),which has killed millions of dreams of everyone, but later my aunties managed somehow ‘the yes’ from papa ”says Zaira over phone from Mumbai. Further she added “ I am doing this film as my hobby and people of Kashmir would think that Zaira is going to do item songs and dance over Bollywood songs which is totally opposite to what I’m doing here.Although we (girls of Dangal) are playing the daughters of the protagonist but Aamir Sir and his production team is treating us as their own daughters, we are like family there,” Lot of times Zaira was threatened by her own close ones for working in Bollywood but she herself says that there were 98% people who supported her to go and work in Mumbai apart from what those 98% people had in their minds about her.
