A free parameter is a variable used in a mathematical model and for scientific modelling.

As opposed to constants, and as opposed to other parameters which are restricted to represent meaningful data, free parameters can be adjusted to allow the models to provide helpful insights.[1] The values of free parameters used in models may be provided by previous experiments, estimated, or assigned randomly.[2]
