In mathematics, a function is supermodular iff

Where denotes the component-wise maximum and the component-wise minimum of and .

If is supermodular, then is called submodular, and if the inequality is changed to an equality, the function is modular.

If is smooth, supermodularity is equivalent to the condition for all .
