Sometimes you may want to cite the same reference in multiple places on a page.

To do so, click the button, and select the "⧼visualeditor-dialog-reference-useexisting-tool⧽" tab. This will display a list of all the references currently used in the article.

To find the reference you want to re-use, either scroll through the list, or use the "⧼visualeditor-reference-input-placeholder⧽" bar at the top. Clicking on a specific reference will insert it into the article.
