Gulf University of Science and Technology commonly known by its abbreviated acronym GUST is the first private university established in Kuwait. Being a university with a progressive and innovative outlook, GUST is envisaged to grow as a modern centre of excellence for education and research in the fields of arts, sciences and business administration. The essence underlying the foundation of GUST revolves around spectral combination of world class instruction, infrastructure and management with the aim to offer the highest academic quality and spirit of excellence epitomizing its cherished objectives.

GUST is committed to the provision of intellectual leadership and development of indigenous research in the country and to emerge as a beacon of light for the Kuwait’s educational, industrial, economical, social and cultural progress.
Established by Amiri Decree 156 in 2002 [1], GUST is accredited by the Kuwait Ministry of Higher Education and has established cooperative ties with the University of Missouri St. Louis (UMSL), USA [2]. Following study at GUST, it is possible for dual enrollment students to complete their program at UMSL if they so desire.

GUST is committed to providing a distinctive education that emphasizes:
Academic excellence
A liberal education base
Academic programs designed so students can succeed
Using the latest advances in information technology

When developing GUST, the planning committee visited several Middle East and US universities to identify the appropriate characteristics of a new university in Kuwait. Based on this analysis, the University of Missouri-St. Louis (UMSL) [3] was identified as a strong university with educational activities in the Middle East and during the GUST planning phase, a long-term cooperative agreement was signed. Consequently the GUST degree programs and philosophy is modeled on that of UMSL and includes a strong general education component combined with specialized education in the various degree disciplines.

GUST recognizes the importance of understanding the rapidly changing world in which we live, in developing information processing and abstraction skills, in becoming more understanding of diverse cultures and in building a strong “inner core” of basic values appropriate to the development of the Kuwaiti nation.
As the first private university in Kuwait, GUST is responding to the growing need for a western style education that is available in the Kuwait Islamic cultural setting. As a responsible member of the community, GUST is committed to ensuring that education and learning is a key priority of the university and that all effort is made to ensure that students are able to succeed in their educational endeavors.
With this in mind, GUST is committed to allocating considerable resources to developing a “state-of the art” campus with the latest information technology supported by a “we care” approach to each individual student’s learning needs.
In summary, GUST strives to imbue an appreciation of learning for its own sake, to encourage students to become “life-long learners” and to readily adapt to the constantly changing environment of the 21st century.
