Void Linux[1] is a Linux distribution built from scratch. Initially, it served for its packet manager, xbps (X Binary Package System), also built from scratch.

Void uses runit as init-system instead of e.g. systemd like other distributions.[2] Void is the first distribution to incorporate LibreSSL[1] for TLS-security by default.[3]

Based on Rolling Releases a system running Void is kept up-to-date with (binary) updates always carrying the newest release.[4] Source packages are maintained on GitHub and can be compiled using a supplied script.[5] The build process does not inflict the current system; builds targeting foreign architectures can be run, too.

Using flavours users can download pre-configured install media providing typical desktop environments, such as Enlightenment, Cinnamon, MATE or Xfce. The installer offers a text-based user interface. The default root shell is Dash.[4]

Void Linux was created 2008 by Juan RP, a former maintainer of NetBSD,[6] to have a test-bed for the xbps package manager.[7]

Many packages are additionally compiled against musl, an alternative libc implementation.[8]

Jessy Smith of Distrowatch notes fast bootup times,[4] but misses some documenation, although manpages are well available. Additionally, the wiki[9] supplies user-related information.
