Informatica Corporation is a software development company founded in 1993. It is headquartered in Redwood City, California.[2] It was founded by Zohaib Abbassi. Anil Chakravarthy is the company's CEO.[2]

History

The company was founded in 1993. It went public on NASDAQ Stock Exchange under the stock symbol INFA on April 29, 1999.

On April 7, 2015, Permira and Canada Pension Plan Investment Board announced that a company controlled by the Permira funds and CPPIB has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Informatica for approximately US$5.3 billion.[3]

On August 6, 2015, Informatica announced completion of acquisition with Microsoft and Salesforce Ventures joined as strategic investors. The company's stock ceased trading on the NASDAQ under the ticker symbol INFA effective on the same date.[4] [5][6]

Products

Informatica's product is a portfolio focused on Data Integration: ETL, Information Lifecycle Management, B2B Data Exchange, Cloud Data Integration, Complex Event Processing, Data Masking, Data Quality, Data Replication, Data Virtualization, Master Data Management, Ultra Messaging; currently at version 9.6 [2] These components form a toolset for establishing and maintaining enterprise-wide data warehouses. It has a customer base of over 5,000 companies.[2][7]

In 2006, Informatica launched its Informatica Cloud business.[8]

In 2010, the Informatica Marketplace was launched offering a data integration eco-system for Partners, Customers, Developers and Informatica to share and leverage data integration solutions.[9] As of Sept 2014, it features over 1,300 pre-built mappings, templates, connectors and add-ons for Informatica data integration and cloud data integration products.[10]

Architecture

Informatica ETL product, known as Informatica Power Center consists of 3 main components.

1. Informatica PowerCenter Client Tools: These are the development tools installed at developer end. These tools enable a developer to

Define transformation process, known as mapping. (Designer) Define run-time properties for a mapping, known as sessions (Workflow Manager) Monitor execution of sessions (Workflow Monitor) Manage repository, useful for administrators (Repository Manager) Report Metadata (Metadata Reporter)

2. Informatica PowerCenter Repository: Repository is the heart of Informatica tools. Repository is a kind of data inventory where all the data related to mappings, sources, targets etc. is kept. This is the place where all the metadata for your application is stored. All the client tools and Informatica Server fetch data from Repository. Informatica client and server without repository is same as a PC without memory/hard disk, which has got the ability to process data but has no data to process. This can be treated as backend of Informatica.

3. Informatica PowerCenter Server: Server is the place, where all the executions take place. Server makes physical connections to sources/ targets, fetches data, applies the transformations mentioned in the mapping and loads the data in the target system.

Types of transformations

  • Active : One that can change the number of rows being output.
  • Passive : One that cannot change the number of rows being output.
  • Connected : One that has at least one link with other transformations or objects in a mapping
  • Unconnected : One that does not have any link with any transformations or objects in a mapping

Also, Active transformation are recognised by any of the following three factors:

  • the transformation changes the row type
  • the transformation changes the row order
  • transaction control happens in the transformation

A transformation which has these properties is said to be an "active transformation", otherwise it is said to be a "passive transformation".

Examples:

  • Source qualifier - converts source datatypes to Informatica datatypes; joins two source tables or files of the same type
  • Expression - transforms data with functions without affecting cardinality or data order
  • Lookups - enhances data elements with lookup values; may be connected or unconnected
  • Filter - filters incoming data
  • Router - routes data to selected output paths
  • Sorter - sorts data and optionally removes duplicate rows
  • Aggregator - aggregates data
  • Joiner - joins relational data midstream; can be used when source data is of multiple types
  • Normalizer - used with flat file input containing arrays or repeated data to create normal form relational data
  • Update Strategy - determines whether data is to be updated, inserted or deleted in cases where there are multiple output targets
  • Transaction Control - creates transactions and controls commits and rollbacks
  • Sequence Generator - generates a sequence of unique values as per the specified parameters
  • Java transformation - invokes Java methods, variables, third-party API's and built-in packages
