Pyongyang Time
Pyongyang Time will be the standard time zone in North Korea from 15 August 2015 and is 8.5 hours ahead of UTC (UTC+08:30): i.e., when it is midnight (00:00) UTC, it is 8:30 a.m. (08:30) Pyongyang Time. North Korea does not currently observe daylight saving time.[1]
History
The Korean Empire first adopted a standard time that is similar to Pyongyang Time. In 1912, following the introduction of Imperial Japanese rule, the colonial government changed this to UTC+09:00 to align with Japan Standard Time. In 1954 it was reverted to UTC+08:30 and then in 1961, it was changed to UTC+09:00 again, called Korea Standard Time.[2] On 5 August 2015, the North Korean government decided to return to UTC+08:30, effective 15 August 2015, and said the official name would be Pyongyang Time.
