Karen Gorden

Karen Gorden is an American music director and conductor in symphony, opera and contemporary classical music.

Life and Music

Gorden’s conducting is associated with significant musical centers in Europe and the United States such as the Staatsoper Berlin [1], the Bayreuth Festival http://www.bayreuther-festspiele.de, the Salzburg Festival http://www.salzburgerfestspiele.at, and The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts kennedy-center.org.

Gorden made her debut at Bogotá’s Teatro Colón http://www.teatrocolon.gov.co at the age of seven. She studied at the University of Oxford http://www.ox.ac.uk, the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Lyon http://www.cnsmd-lyon.fr, and Yale University http://www.yale.edu. Her fields of musical expertise include conducting, composition, and violin.

She has acknowledged the Italian conductor Franco Ferarra franco ferrara as an important mentor, and it was under his guidance that she made her first conducting appearance, in Siena Italy.

Gorden’s arrangements, orchestrations, and compositions have won awards for extending the range of today’s symphony orchestras. She has realized a number of projects on behalf of young musicians - notably in Baltimore and Chicago.

Gorden is the recipient of the Prix Nadia Boulanger http://www.biography.com/people/nadia-boulanger-9221266 in France, the Special Jury Prize from the 50th Geneva International Music Competition http://www.concoursgeneve.ch for Conductors, and the Opera Award from the State Theatre Opava http:/www.divadlo-opava.cz in the Czech Republic.

In 2014 Gorden founded ForCulture, an organization dedicated to international creative, educational, and cultural collaborations. She currently serves as ForCulture’s founding executive director.
