The Shield Tablet is a tablet aimed at gaming, developed by Nvidia and released on July 29, 2014.[2] This is Nvidia's second portable gaming device that uses Android. Compared to the Shield Portable, the controller is not permanently connected to the screen, rather it can be purchased separately. Up to four controllers can be wirelessly connected at the same time. While the Shield tablet features an 8-inch 1920x1200 pixel display, it can output 4K resolution to a television via HDMI.[3]

Features

It is powered by an Nvidia Tegra K1 SoC and has stereo front facing speakers. There's a 16GB WiFi-only model and a 32GB LTE model. It has front and back facing 5 megapixel HDR cameras. It weighs 390 grams and is 221 x 126 x 9.2 mm in size.[4][5]

Nvidia released Shield Tablet OTA 2.0 update with Android 5.0 Lollipop on November 18, 2014.[6][7]

Nvidia released Shield Tablet OTA 2.1 update with Android 5.0.1 Lollipop & OpenGL 4.5 support on December 23, 2014.[8][9]

Nvidia released Shield Tablet OTA 2.2.1 update on February 26, 2015.[10][11]

Nvidia released Shield Tablet OTA 3.0 update with Android 5.1 Lollipop on May 22, 2015. The OTA 3.0 Update was pulled from circulation to investigate audio issues being report. [12][13]

Reception

Mark Dost's recommends the Shield Tablet, saying that the tablet has lots to offer for both serious gamers and everyday users and it is currently the best Android gaming device. The downsides are the battery life is not very long, it allows around 3 hours of gaming but only 6.5 hours of video and it gets very hot when put to work. Android Central's Andrew Martonik likes the Shield Tablet, praising the tablet's speakers and the Twitch streaming ability. The downsides are the tablet is heavier than its competitor (390g to the Nexus 7's 290g) and thinks it can be too expensive for some (tablet is $299 to $399, the controller is $59 and the cover is $39).[14]

Issues

In August 2014, several owners reported cracks on the case leading pieces from the case falling apart and even warpings due to overheating of the device, Nvidia is reportedly aware of the issue but said it is limited to a few tablets and also added that a new manufacturing process would ensure to prevent this problem from happening and no LTE model would have such issues. As of January 2015, there are still current reports of tablets having the aforementioned issues, including the LTE model.[citation needed]
