There is another article entitled Front end processor which is more abstract. This article seems highly IBM specific. I have a more accurate article at IBM 3705 Communications Controller.

The term "network processing software" is suspicious. A quick Google search doesn't mention it nor does IBM 3704 and 3705 Principle of Operation. The desciption of the interface between 3705 CCU and adapater and scanner interfaces is somewhat flawed. Priority of various communicaton lines is determined by hardware (assisted by two software-set priority bits associated with each line). Changing a half-duplex lineset to full-duplex requires an external cable change (and reduces the number of lines by one).
