As of May 2015, VisualEditor includes a tool to automatically fill citations. For some types of references, the tool is able to retrieve information about the source, and add it using one of the usual citation templates. You can see screenshots or test the tool yourself in your sandbox, for example with sources like the following:

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/04/01/world/africa/nigeria-election-muhammadu-buhari-goodluck-jonathan.html
doi:10.1038/nature14258

This tool notably uses Zotero to extract the information. Zotero was originally created for academic research, and may not work as well with other types of sources used on Wikipedia, like news outlets or popular culture websites.

The VisualEditor team has identified the most cited domains on the English Wikipedia, in order to test them with the citation tool and identify possible areas of improvement.

The table below only includes the first few entries from the list of most cited domains. You can look at the longer list and add entries if you check other sites.
